CONFESSIONS OF A RACE DAY LOSER.

The day started out as a normal one. Though it had an air of excitement, for today was the Wiener Nationals at Los Alamitos. We  packed up the car with all the stuff we thought we would need. I had to sit in the way-back because my brother and sister were coming with me to the race, to cheer me on and take pictures. 

Ugh! We had an hour and half drive ahead of us. I hate driving in the car.  So I figured I should try to close my eyes and nap.

When we finally got to the race track, we found our group some seats and got in line to sign-in. At sign-in the officials gave us our racing jersey. I was white number two, which meant we were in the second qualifier slot number 2. Because we were in the qualifiers we ran before any of the televised races started. We had to win our race to get in the official trials.

Before we had to line up for the race, my parents took me out to the grass so I could relieve myself. They  wanted me to have my mind clear. I peed, but I was too anxious to concentrate on what they were asking me to do. I just walked around and sniffed a bit. So we went back inside the park and  got in line for the race. I was so excited that I was shaking and whining. My mom tried to get my attention with little pieces of bacon and my squeaky ball, but I just wanted to get out on the field and race. I knew what I had to do.

The moment was finally here. We walked out on the race track. The trumpet was played to announce the start of our race. We processed down the side of the track as the announcer gave out the names of racers. We were heading towards the racing boxes. My mom handed me to my dad who would place me in the starting box and my mom made her way back across the field to the finish line.

My dad lowered me into my slot and held me there. I looked out the glass port hole intently in anticipation of the door opening. I butted my head against it, In hopes I could get it to open early. I whined with anticipation. Then the door opened! I was one of the first out at least a head in front of the other dogs. I ran quickly through the deep racing dirt, straining every muscle to make it to the finish line first. I was almost there, when something dreadful happened. My stomach made an awful rumble! One that made me lose my focus and I slowed a bit. I heard my mom yell “Don't slow down you are almost there. Go! Go! Go!” I tried to redouble my speed but it was already too late.  I felt mired in the thick dirt of the racing track. I ran towards my mom and went after the ball she threw to help me focus past the finish line. I got the ball then went back to find my dad. But wait! There was that awful rumble in my tummy again. I stopped and did what my mom had tried to get me to do in private before the race. I pooped. I pooped, in front of all those racing fans, there projected on the big screen! How embarrassing! I have to say my stomach felt much better but a little too late. For when all was said and done, I had come in third.

Doxies run for a good cause on Saturday, July 10

There will be a lot of barking going on at Los Alamitos Race Course on Saturday, July 10, as 98 dauchshunds will compete in the 15th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals starting at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are available starting at $3 for grandstand. Last year Hornblower Cruises collected thousands of blankets and towels and had hundreds of attendees with their dogs take advantage of their dogs being allowed on Harbor Cruises!

Tickets for a one hour Harbor Cruise can be used any time when you come back in 2010.

Dogs must be on a leash and are allowed to ride along on a one-hour cruise.

According to John Van Zante from HWAC, “When heavy winter rains forced Helen Woodward Animal Center to evacuate orphaned dogs and cats from their kennels the donated blankets and towels gave them comfort.” He said, “This also created an urgent need to replace those supplies that were lost during the flood. Your donation of a new or gently used blanket or towel will help to keep an orphan warm and cozy until its new family takes it to its forever home.”

ONE LUCKY DOG THE MOVIE

I don't want this to sound like a shameless plug. But I keep hitting my limit as to how many friend I can invite to my  Facebook page. So If you have a dachshund and a Facebook page please signed me up as a friend and don't forget to suggest me to your other friends.

I started meeting dachshunds on line because I am trying to get a walk on roll to a new movie coming out called One Lucky Dog the Movie, the more doxie friends I have the better my chances.  

It has become such fun meeting other dachshunds from around the world. Sharing my favorite picks and videos and viewing theirs. I hope you become my friend! Doggie Street Festival Mission:

The Doggie Street Festival is dedicated to increasing pet adoption through its yearly Festival. This Festival is designed to be an informative experience that promotes public awareness, education and information focused on the solutions of pet homelessness.

The Festival spotlights San Diego County’s breed-specific rescue groups and shelters and to that extent, hosts these organizations county-wide with their adoptable dogs providing them a platform free of charge to distribute literature, advocate and encourage responsible pet-adoption.

The Doggie Street Festival is also committed to presenting special educational events and projects throughout the year that will inform and educate the public on a range of ways to become more involved in positive change in an effort to encourage public participation to end pet homelessness in our communities.

A walk for the Escondido Humane Society Sunday, March 28, 2010 @ Kit Carson Park, Escondido, CA.
The goal of this great event is to raise awareness and funding for animals in need while celebrating those special pets in our lives. The event is called “Paws in the Park” and will be happening on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. Paws in the Park helps the Escondido Humane Society care for more than 4,000 animals a year and protect 155,000 more, and they NEED YOUR HELP. Every dollar raised at Paws in the Park will be transformed into safe shelter, healthy food, medical care, rehabilitation, and new, loving homes.
As an open-door shelter, the Escondido Humane Society welcomes all homeless animals in the Escondido area, no matter their age, health, or intensive needs. Every day, for every one of these animals, they are faithfully devoted to providing them with safe shelter, medical care, love and new homes … every animal deserves a second chance.

WOOFSTOCK: A Festival for Dogs & People

THE FESTIVAL:
There will be live music, munchies, and shopping for unique pet products. Watch exciting demonstrations of Disc Dogs, Flyball, and Canine Freestyle. See working dogs in action. Let your pooch play at the K9 Playground! Wear your 60’s threads to compete in the Grooviest 60’s Costume contest, and fish for prizes in the fun zone for kids. THE WALK:
Register for the Peace, Love, and Walk ‘n Roll fun dog walk (approx. 1.3 miles) to benefit Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). CCI is a national non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Walk registration fee ($35 adult, $15 child, $60 family) includes a cool WOOFSTOCK tie dye t-shirt, free Festival admission and a sWAG bag filled with great surprises! The walk precedes the WOOFSTOCK Festival and begins at 9:00AM. Please register by March 15 to guarantee t-shirt availability.

5th Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition!

See Spot surf during the Loews Dog Surfing Competition – the nation’s original surfing competition for man’s best friend. More than 50 canine counterparts from across the U.S. will hang 10 (errr, 20) for a great cause..

Schedule:10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Optional practice session for registered dogs
11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Division One: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under)
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Division Two: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over)
12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Division Three: Tandem Surfing for Surf Dogs & Humans
1:15 p.m. Awards' Ceremony

Judging Process:Each division will be divided into 10-minute heats where your dog will compete with up to five other dogs. Each competitor will be allowed to catch as many waves as they can during each heat. The top two scores will be added to determine each competitor’s final score.

Judges are looking for confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” Judging will be conducted by Teevan McManus, Owner of Coronado Surfing Academy; Mayor Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach; and Kathleen Cochran, General Manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort.


Prizes:If your dog’s a surfing champion, you’ll score a ton of great prizes, including the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort … and endless bragging rights.
 
Competition Fees: $50 for Divisions One or Two, $55 for Division Three (if registered by May 20). Fees also include a competition medal and a great goody bag filled with treats. All proceeds will benefit the resort’s non-profit partner. General admission is free.

We are a diverse group of citizens who share a common passion and vision for Fiesta Island. We are the largest user group of Fiesta Island and unlike other user groups, we use the island 365 days a year, rain or shine. FIDO has a board of 11 members who are working hard with the city to find a reasonable solution that meets the needs of 'all' Fiesta Island Users.
