After
an intense first round of competition at the Wienerschnitzel Wiener
Nationals August 3rd, the field has been narrowed and 16 dachshunds will
advance to the San Diego regional final set for September 1st at the
Del Mar Race Track. In all, more than 300 dogs took part in the 18th
annual event that was held on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium and
serves as a fund-raiser for the non-profit Holiday Bowl.
It was a local standout, Meeko of San Diego, who recorded the fastest time of the day, covering the 53-foot grass track in a time of 2.44 seconds. Truffle, who made the trip down from Costa Mesa, was next at 2.56 seconds. Rounding out the top five fastest dachshunds were Reggie Racer at 2.60 seconds (Corona, Calif.), Presley (Placentia, Calif.), and Alvin (San Diego), who were both clocked at 2.63 seconds.
The winner from the Del Mar regional final will advance to the national championship set for Monday, Dec. 30 prior to the start of the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale that is shown to a national television audience.
